Parimutuel slot machines are expected to fail - 2003-03-15
Members of a panel that will see a measure to authorize slot machines at horse and dog tracks say it probably won't survive a subcommittee vote next week.

Greenstein recognized he does not have the votes to get it through the subcommittee, forecasting it will lose on a 5-3 vote. The Republican-dominated House is normally opposed to expansions of gambling.

Representative John Conyers, Jr., in association with Representatives Cannon, Berkley, and Baca, today brought in legislation to design a commission to make recommendations as to how the States might govern online gambling.

You may recollect an unsuccessful experiment the U.S. government tried in the 1920s called Prohibition. Today, Congress is hurrying to pass a similar ill-conceived prohibition of Internet gambling.
