Pennsylvania gov. attempts another slot machine plan - 2004-01-28
Gov. Ed Rendell stated Tuesday that his administration would blend elements of several delayed gambling bills into one bill and use the profits from legalizing slot machines to cut property taxes, fatten horse-racing purses and fund construction projects.

The slot machine proposal was the focus of Rendell's 2002 election campaign, but Rendell recognized that he waited until now to move in hopes that legislators who had quickly introduced bills last spring could reach a deal.

VLT's Make Glitzy Debut In NYS - 2004-01-28
The state's huge gamble on video lottery terminals started today in a maze of flashing lights in a room larger than a football field.

With the launching, critics say, the state's constitution, penned in 1777 was trampled. Cornelius Murray, an attorney representing anti-gambling concerns, disputes that the state constitution bans slot machines, VLT's and most casino gambling.
