Decision due today on federal acknowledgement of tribe - 2004-01-29
The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs will determine today whether to give federal recognition to the Connecticut-based Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, the first of a number of decisions impacting New England tribes expected this year.

A Connecticut congressman, simultaneously, brought in legislation on Wednesday that would require Indian tribes to obtain state legislative authorization prior to building casinos.

Report sees no monetary bonus from a casino - 2004-01-29
A deal that would permit the Ho-Chunk Nation to expand a bingo hall into a casino would likely not result in a financial bonus for the city, according to a new report.

Pugh stated that a Madison casino will attract tourist dollars and raise the property tax base. "Nobody ever said this will solve all the budget problems," she explained. "But it will help a lot of people in times of significant budget cuts."
