Mirage CEO optimistic about Borgata's future - 2004-01-29
When the Borgata launched in July, Terry Lanni, CEO of MGM Mirage, partners in the $1.2 billion resort, prepared a date of six months to calculate whether his company would go ahead with a major development on land it owned in the marina district near to Borgata.

The casino racked in over $266 million in gambling earnings in six months, placing second to the much bigger Bally's Atlantic City in every month since August.

With the high-powered assistance of former state Assembly Speaker Mel Miller, now a supporter, the presidents of Nassau and Suffolk Off Track Betting Corp. secretly met last week with an official at the area's biggest business group, the Long Island Association, to talk about the mother of all bets.

What state officials are examining is a plan that would create what, in effect, would be eight quasi-casinos within the state -- five in New York City -- each of which would have as many as 2,000 of these lottery machines.
