A familiar figure in casino gaming is going ahead with plans for a riverboat in Country Club Hills while an equally prominent group's plan for Crestwood is in question, the Daily Southtown has learned.

Joseph Canfora — a former president of Joliet's Empress Casinos who later helped expose a Missouri gambling scandal — is leading a group that hopes to bring a casino to Country Club Hills.

Economists and Wall Street veterans say the long-slumping economy is finally picking up.

Yet hundreds of Tampa Bay residents rose before dawn Saturday to apply for jobs with the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa, suggesting the economy has a way to go before it's robust again.
