Rose should be barred for gambling, 2 ex-players say - 2004-01-07
Tucsonans Donnie Lee and Pat Darcy are former major-league pitchers who come off as an echo of one another when asked about Pete Rose.

"Every year in spring training, from rookie league to the big leagues, we were told to stay away from all forms of gambling," said Darcy, a former Rincon High School pitcher who was Rose's teammate on the 1975-77 Cincinnati Reds. "There was a huge sign on every clubhouse door. 'No gambling.' You couldn't miss it."

Says Lee, a UA All-American pitcher and nine-year big-league veteran: "Every player who has walked into a big-league clubhouse, from spring training on, has been told there is no excuse for gambling. That's the big one. We all knew it."

Rose's actions do not convince - 2004-01-07
Now that Pete Rose, the king of base hits and baser behavior, has verified that he willfully and repeatedly committed one of baseball's most egregious offenses — the cardinal sin of gambling on the game while in uniform — what is the stunned congregation to do about it?

Well, probably not much, if you follow shifting public opinion, and that may shout volumes to the pope of our national pastime, Bud Selig, who presumably will make his decision after monitoring public fallout.
