As I witnessed six inches of winter turn my street into a luge run yesterday afternoon, I embraced life as a recluse and switched on ESPN to find out how many boys of summer had been voted into the baseball Hall of Fame.

The fact that he's coming forward in a book, a network interview and a magazine feature this week smacks of the desperate opportunism you always see from faded stars trying for one more big payday. In Rose's case, the gambling admission may enhance his chances of getting into the Hall of Fame.

Schwarzenegger calls for huge overhaul - 2004-01-07
With the same kind of tough but optimistic talk he used to get elected to office, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger implored California's legislators Tuesday to help him balance the state's books.

He also proposed a "predictable" college fee system that could limit annual increases to 10 percent, a "green bank" of state funds to promote energy-efficient buildings and announced renewed efforts to renegotiate Indian gambling pacts.
