Arena Leisure goes ahead with British racino idea - 2004-01-08
British racing conglomerate Arena Leisure announced on Wednesday night to investors that it intends to go ahead on a $21.8-million racino project at Wolverhampton racecourse that would be Britain’s first combined track and casino.

The firm had announced last April that it planned to join with Gala Casinos to open the racino at Wolverhampton, which features an all-weather course, as well as extend the already existing on-site hotel.

California tribes plan campaign against allowing track slots - 2004-01-08
Six Indian tribes in California have commited $1.5-million each to finance a campaign against a proposed November ballot initiative that would allow slot machines at state racetracks and card rooms.

The tribes currently have the exclusive right to run casino-style gambling in California, and they return only minimal proceeds to the state. If the ballot measure passes, the tribes could pay as much as 25% of revenue to the state, which could total as much as $1.25-billion annually.
