Gov. chooses gambling panel chief - 2004-02-13
In an attempt to patch a long-open hole in the state Gambling Control Commission, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed a retired Fair Oaks police officer Thursday to become the panel's chairman.

But the commission has never had over four members and has been hamstrung in its effectiveness by rivals from some casino tribes and indifference by lawmakers and the Governor's Office.

Casino amendment reviewed - 2004-02-13
State officials are looking into an amendment to the state constitution that would permit non-Indians to launch casinos, officials stated Thursday.
The motion could push several American Indian nations to resolve differences with the state and complete the six casinos the governor and Legislature permitted the tribes to open in 2001, some officials reported.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver stated that he is opposed to the amendment, fearing it could postpone the construction of casinos even longer.
