Lawmakers hear earful on gambling - 2004-02-03
Iowans seeking a new casino in their region argued passionately Monday night that an expansion of gambling would be great for economic development, but several compulsive gamblers revealed a different story.

Many of those in favor of expanding gambling were from districts wanting to construct a new casino. Locals of Black Hawk, Franklin, Palo Alto, Wapello and Worth counties have voted to approve gambling.

High court to disclose racetrack tax decision - 2004-02-03
The Iowa Supreme Court expects to rule today in a high-stakes case featuring $112 million in state taxes on racetrack casino slot machines.

The court is expected to reveal its ruling at 8:15 a.m., stated Rebecca Colton, executive assistant to Chief Justice Louis Lavorato. The action is in response to aa decision by the U.S. Supreme Court last June, which collectively reversed the Iowa Supreme Court's finding that state taxes on racetrack casinos were unconstitutional.
