Arbitration requested in Campo casino dispute - 2004-02-04
A Superior Court judge decided yesterday that the Campo Indian band can't walk away from a $24 million debt to the Louisiana tribe that bankrolled construction of the Golden Acorn Casino 2½ years ago.

Judge Stephanie Sontag commanded the East County tribe to enter binding arbitration to settle a contract conflict with its former casino development partner, First Nation Gaming.

Tribes, Arnold draw closer to negotiation - 2004-02-04
Negotiators for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and eight Indian tribes have moved forward quickly on a long-term agreement that would expand casino gambling operations while greatly increasing payments to the state, sources reported Tuesday.

The sources stated that a deal could be reached as early as April or May that would protect $500 million from the tribes for next year's deficit-ridden budget and 15 percent of gaming earnings annually for future budgets.
