Ruling revives gambling war at Statehouse - 2004-02-04
The state Supreme Court practically guaranteed a high-stakes war this year regarding the future of gambling in Iowa when it decided Tuesday that higher taxes on racetrack casinos were uncon- stitutional.

The state could lose close to $251 million thanks to the 5-2 ruling, according to calculations by the Legislative Services Agency. This would feature $112.6 million in tax refunds owed to Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino, and Bluffs Run Casino and Greyhound Park in Council Bluffs.

Tourist Venues Pop Up, Result From Casino Funds - 2004-02-04
A $26 million museum and ecological park have launched on the banks of the Mississippi River, the most recent in a line of entertainment developments targeted towards tourism and largely paid for with casino tax money.

The museum sits on 130 acres of wilderness through which developers expect to build a system of trails. Nearby, tourists can float up the river on an old-fashioned paddle boat, passing both cotton fields and casinos in what was the poorest area in the nation.
